In working with my son who is trying to understand prepositions and what they modify, I recalled how in my school we had to learn how to dissect sentences. I was thinking that this could be done very creatively on an Activboard (being able to move text around and all) so I've been working on a concept. Here's a video of it. Would love any feedback.
Lisa, I am diagramming sentences right now with my 5th graders. I think this is very useful skill--every word has a job...I did a flipchart very quickly in class by making the diagram "t's", as well as making ones for compound subjects and verbs, and used the icon to make a copy. However, I like your way much better! Could you tell me how you clicked on the words to bring them out from the sentence? I remember a way to do this in ActivStudio, but haven't found it in Inspire...it's probably right in front of me and I don't know it!
You give the whole text object the action Extract Text. Then when you click on a word, it makes a copy of it that you can move around. I'll submit the flipchart to Planet today if I get a sec!
Thank you! I remember the tool used to have another name and I had been looking for that...
I've posted the sentence diagramming flipchart on Planet now. My 12 year old son tested it for me. He's studying direct and indirect objects and needed help. Another flipchart for that is coming soon. (Twelve year old boys are not into grammar.)
Here's the link.
I just saw this interesting article about Diagramming Sentences. Hope you find it helpful!
