We have made available a standalone installer which contains ActivInspire only, for those of you who want to run ActivInspire on distributions other than Ubuntu 9.04/9.10 and Debian Lenny (if you are using these distros, it is better to use the relevant software repository, as explained on the download page on Promethean Planet http://support.prometheanplanet.com/)

There are 3 .tar.gz file:

http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux...inspire.tar.gz (~ 262 MB)
This contains Inspire + Handwriting recognition + Resources (backgrounds, grids, etc...)

http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux..._no_hwr.tar.gz (~136 MB)
This contains Inspire + Resources (backgrounds, grids, etc...)

http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux...re_only.tar.gz (~55 MB)
This contains Inspire only with English handwriting recognition only and no resources. I recommend using this one if you have a netbook with limited disk space. It installs to about 132 MB on the OS partition ( the one containing / ) (some netbooks only reserve limited space on the OS partition and keep all the remaining space for /home )

There is an MD5SUMS file too to double check the integrity of your download:
http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux/MD5SUMS

Follow the installation instructions here:

Self contained installer for Linux ActivInspire only (no drivers)

http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux...inspire.tar.gz

Download instructions
1/ download the tar.gz file
2/ Open a terminal
3/ untar it by typing the following :
tar xvpf activinspire.tar.gz
This will create an inspire directory.
5/ Type cd inspire to change directory
4/ As root or with sudo, install by running the install bash script:
with su: su –c "./install.sh"
with sudo: sudo ./install.sh

This will install Inspire only. If running GNOME, your main menu should contain an Education section, with ActivInspire. You can always run the command from anywhere (prompt, run window, etc...) by typing inspire.

NB: this is a 32-bit version of Inspire. We have done very limited testing on 64-bit. It will run on Ubuntu using the ia32-libs package.

I have tried this method on the following distributions:
Mandriva 2009, Fedora 10, Debian 5, openSuse 11.x, Ubuntu 8.xx 64-bit (with ia32-libs installed)

This does not work on ASUS eeepc running Xandros.

I recommend you turn off 3D effects on your desktop (Compiz, Metisse, etc...) as it slows down annotations in Inspire.
